Why is my signature so short?
You are most probably using a DSA signing key. The DSA signing key is shorter than a RSA key of the same size due to its design. Keep in mind that it isn't any less secure for that reason. Altough an RSA key will allow you to use digest alorithms of another length than 160 bits, such as SHA256 a 160bit hashing algorithm (such as SHA1) will be sufficient for most communications.
